Reno first responders hold realistic active shooter drills at North Valley High School

RENO, Nev. — North Valley High School recently hosted a series of active shooter scenario trainings, bringing together multiple first responder agencies to ensure coordinated efforts in the event of a real-life crisis. The training sessions, which began on Wednesday, involved the Reno Police Department, Reno Fire Department, REMSA, and the Washoe County School District Police.

Officer Chris Johnson of the Reno Police Department emphasized the importance of such exercises. “This is extremely important to be able to be on the same page as other local law enforcement,” he said. “It allows us at the Reno Police Department to know kind of how the response for the school police department would be and vice versa and be able to combine our efforts and be able to effectively neutralize any threats that are occurring.”

The training scenarios were designed to be as realistic as possible, with officers donning full gear and engaging in simulated gunfights using special training ammunition. Johnson explained, “In the end, they’re essentially like paint rounds. There is some combustion that takes place but allows us to be able to fire. And it mimics and looks exactly like the guns that we are using and carrying every single day so that we have the most realistic training.”…
