BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — SEIU 521 put out a statement expressing concerns and frustration over Kern County’s latest response to federal and state funding cuts, which includes plans to reduce its public health services and lay off 27 health care workers.
Suzanne McWhorter, a Kern County Public Health nurse and a member of SEIU 521 who the statement was attributed to, said her clinic in Shafter is being shut down and she is being forced to relocate away from her town.
Communities like Lost Hills, Wasco and Buttonwillow are now left without health care and resources, McWhorter said in the statement.
