City Detect CEO talks AI cameras Huntsville is considering mounting on trash trucks

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Concerns over cost, privacy, and data led the Huntsville City Council to hit pause on a plan that would put AI cameras on every garbage truck in the City.

Thursday night, the Huntsville City Council discussed an agreement with City Detect. It’s an AI-based software that uses cameras to help collect data on municipal violations.

City officials give update after one year of ‘hands-free’ ordinance

The meeting on Thursday lasted several hours, with a large chunk of the discussion among council members surrounding that topic. Ten members of the public also spoke out during the public comment section of the meeting.

One woman, who identified herself as Amanda, said, “I oppose the City Detect contract because it increases surveillance and, in my opinion, is invasive.”…
