TxDOT launches ‘operation slow down’ to target speeding drivers in Texas

Country music star and Conroe-native Parker McCollum has joined the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in a decree to fellow Texans to slow down on the road. The weeks-long campaign aims to reduce traffic crashes following 160,000 incidents, many of which were fatal, taking place last year.

Law enforcement officers across the state are teaming up with the transportation agency from now through Sunday, August, 3, for “Operation Slow Down,” paying extra attention to motorists who are driving above the speed limit. During this period, officers will spend increased time monitoring streets and issuing tickets to remind folks to match their pace to the assigned road limits, a TxDOT news release states.

Speeding took the lives of 123 people in San Antonio in 2024, according to TxDOT. Statewide, it resulted in 1,467 deaths, and caused serious injury to 5,921 others. Ultimately, it’s the number one contributing factor of crashes in Texas, the agency says…
