Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Deputy Elijah Ming, 34, was tragically killed in the line of duty Saturday afternoon. Deputies responded to a civil standby call at a residence where a man had barricaded himself inside. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Shawn Harris of Kansas City, Kansas, opened fire, fatally wounding Deputy Ming.
Ming, a nine-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. After a standoff lasting approximately 90 minutes, Harris surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody. The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department assisted in the response.
Sheriff Daniel Soptic expressed his deep condolences to Deputy Ming’s family, friends, and colleagues, requesting prayers for the community and the department. Wyandotte Mayor Tyrone Garner, who met with Ming’s family at the hospital, stated, “There are no words or comfort that can ever ease the pain of losing someone you love to senseless violence.”
