Amarillo College Fire Academy holds physical ability test for future firefighters

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – Amarillo College’s Fire Academy is putting future firefighters through their paces with a physical ability test designed to simulate real-world tasks.

The test is an important part of the application process for the college’s Fire Academy. Students participated in a series of physical challenges, including carrying tools, dragging hoses, and performing rescues. The test is designed to measure their physical fitness and ensure they are ready for the demanding work of a firefighter.

“We really stress physical fitness,” said Steve Malley, Fire Academy coordinator at Amarillo College. “By utilizing the testing, we get a good idea of where the students are physically, and then we spend the next 16 weeks getting them ready.”
