Ridgewood, NJ native and ROTC cadet Neil Edara tragically passed away during training at Fort Knox, Kentucky on July 24. The 22-year-old was participating in land navigation exercises at the time.
Medical personnel were immediately on the scene and Edara was transported via helicopter to the University of Louisville, where he was pronounced deceased. The cause of death is currently under investigation.
Edara, a student at Rutgers University, joined the ROTC program in September 2021 and was attending the Advanced Camp as part of the 9th Regiment. Lt.
Col. Timothy Sorensen, professor of military science at Rutgers University, remembered Edara as a dedicated and promising young leader.
“His calm collected demeanor and unwavering commitment to excellence left a lasting impact on everyone around him,” Sorensen stated, adding that Edara’s loss is deeply felt by the entire ROTC and Rutgers community.
The U.S. Army Cadet Command emphasized their commitment to cadet and cadre safety as training continues, ensuring access to support and counseling services.
Fort Knox, home to the U.S. Bullion Depository and a significant portion of the nation’s gold reserves, also serves as a key training site for the military, offering diverse terrain for various exercises, including land navigation.
