Earthquake reported in active seismic zone outside Henderson

KENTUCKY (FOX 56) — An earthquake was detected early Friday around 13 miles outside of Henderson in a well-known seismic zone.

At 12:08 a.m., the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) said a magnitude 2.6 earthquake was reported about five miles east-northeast of Uniontown at a depth of around 15 miles. Due to the hour of the day and it happening so deep underground, the survey said most people didn’t feel it.

While earthquakes are rare in this region, KGS noted the tremor occurred within the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone, which has a history of producing large earthquakes. In 2008, near Mt. Carmel, Indiana, recordings from the Kentucky Seismic and Strong-Motion Network detected a magnitude 5.2 earthquake…
