Pompano Beach Fire Rescue was called to a fiery emergency at the Broward County Hazardous Waste Drop-Off site. At around 6:00 a.m., an explosion set off an intense blaze at the premises located at 2780 N Powerline Road, where hundreds of propane tanks were caught in a volatile inferno. According to the official statement from Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, Ladder 61 met with the challenging sight of these tanks burning and exploding upon arrival. The heat and potential for additional detonations threatened nearby hazardous materials units, propelling firefighters to call for a second aerial apparatus to help in curbing the danger, as reported by the City of Pompano Beach.
While tackling the inferno, firefighters established two water sources to maintain steady efforts against the layers of flames. The added complications of the hazardous materials required support from the Broward County HazMat, who took on the task of monitoring the atmosphere and reading levels of hazardous substances in the vicinity. The Florida DEP, ATF, and State Fire Marshal were brought in to probe the incident further and oversee the environmental implications of the event.
