Scientists to study impact of PFAS contamination at site of Rockton chemical fire

Scientists from the University of Illinois in Chicago are studying the spread of ‘forever chemicals’ and their impact on public health in and around the site of a 2021 chemical fire in Rockton.

In the coming weeks and months, researchers intend to gather private well water samples and forge community connections to learn more about the 200-acre Superfund site along the Rock River and the ways in which PFAS contamination has spread through the area.

The Chemtool lubricant facility, which suffered a massive chemical explosion June 14, 2021, had been built on an existing Superfund site that was home to Beloit Corp., a paper-making equipment manufacturer that ceased operations in 1999…
