NASA concludes voluntary separations, impact on Alabama center unknown

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Marshall Space Flight Center’s specific staffing impact remains unclear as NASA concluded its voluntary separation programs on July 25, with approximately 3,000 employees across the agency choosing to depart.

While NASA has not yet released numbers for the Alabama facility, the center is expected to be affected by the agency-wide reduction that saw about 16.4 percent of NASA’s workforce opt for voluntary departure through various programs.

Departure Programs Impact

NASA offered multiple voluntary options: the initial Deferred Resignation Program attracted about 870 employees (4.8 percent of the workforce), while a second program including Voluntary Early Retirement Authority and Voluntary Separation Incentive Program drew roughly 3,000 participants.

Combined with normal attrition of about 500 employees, NASA’s civil servant workforce is expected to drop to approximately 14,000 from previous levels…
