Huntsville residents gathered Monday to honor the Buffalo Soldiers on National Buffalo Soldiers Day. The celebration paid tribute to the first African American Army regiments formed after the Civil War.
Historians from Alabama A&M University explained that in 1866, Congress created six all-Black regiments, later consolidated into four. These soldiers served with distinction, earning the name “Buffalo Soldiers,” believed to be given by Native American tribes due to their curly hair resembling a buffalo’s coat and their fighting spirit.
