Police department sees largest drug seizure in recent memory

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. — In the second quarter of this year, the Hopkinsville Police Department got 5.68 pounds of fentanyl off the streets of the city.

That’s 1.2 million lethal doses of the drug that were seized in the weeks from April 1 to June 30, said Hopkinsville Police Chief Jason Newby, citing data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that says about 2 milligrams of fentanyl is a lethal dose.

“That’s huge,” the chief notes of the 5.68 pounds of the synthetic opioid that were seized recently in the local community. “Imagine how many overdoses that our officers more than likely prevented just by doing that.”…
