Veteran’s widow gets long-awaited VA benefits after private company fails him

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Every morning, Ken Cressman makes a cup of sweet tea for his 98-year-old mother, Joan—her favorite drink and a small gesture in a long journey that began when he moved her from Pennsylvania to Greensboro a few years ago.

“She was still fairly independent,” Cressman said, “but it ended up being a lot of work too.”

With Joan needing in-home care several times a week, the cost began to climb. “She had no money basically when she moved down here,” Cressman explained. That’s when he learned Joan, as the widow of a veteran, might be eligible for Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits…
