Athens police remind drivers to obey school zone speed limits ahead of school year

ATHENS, Ala. — School is about to start in Athens, and local police are ramping up efforts to keep kids safe on the roads. With students heading back to class on August 5, Athens Police Chief Anthony Pressnell is urging drivers to slow down, stay alert, and prepare for new traffic patterns near the recently relocated Julian Newman Elementary School.

Chief Pressnell said officers will be patrolling school zones to monitor speeding and other traffic violations. He reminded drivers that the move of Julian Newman Elementary from Clinton Street to its new campus on Julian Newman Drive will affect traffic flow in the area.

“I urge motorists to obey all traffic laws and to expect delays around the school zones,” Pressnell said. “The Athens Police Department wants all students to have a safe return to school and a great school year.”…
