Loudon County Schools to start aviation program after receiving grant

LOUDON COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — Loudon County Schools announced Monday that it had received the Perkins Reserve Grant to start an aviation program for high school juniors and seniors.

The program is meant to prepare students to earn a Private Pilot License or a commercial drone license, according to a release from the school system. The grant will allow the district to form a contract with AVZ Flight Academy to offer a year-long program called Transforming Aspirations into Knowledge, Experience and Opportunities for Future Flyers (T.A.K.E.O.F.F.).

The program combines education with “hands-on flight training.” Students will get guidance from seasoned flight professionals with years of experience, according to a graphic shared by the district.

“This is awesome for future aviation enthusiasts!” said State Representative Lowell Russell, who represents part Loudon and Monroe counties.

In order to enroll in the program, students must turn 17 before the end of May 2026. They must be able to pass an FAA medical exam and provide proof of citizenship, according to the graphic. They also need reliable transportation to McGhee Tyson Airport and the Loudon County Technology Center…
