‘Not your grandmother’s heat wave.’ Why Tennessee summer heat feels more extreme in 2025

Summer evenings in Tennessee are usually a welcome reprieve from the heat, but even that won’t be the case this week.

Communities across Tennessee have been dealing with heat indices reaching into the 100s for almost a week during the day, now the heat will be following us into the twilight hours, according to the National Weather Service.

“This week’s heatwave is going to have compound effects. Temperatures overnight will barely cool down below 80 degrees, which makes it more difficult to regulate your body’s temperature without access to AC.
