Hundreds attend town hall, question Portland leaders about new shelter in the Pearl

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — A long line formed outside the Armory in Northwest Portland on Monday afternoon. Hundreds of residents from some of the city’s most affluent neighborhoods lined up to question leaders about plans to build a homeless shelter in the Pearl District.

Many pushed back against Mayor Keith Wilson’s promises that there would be no livability issues associated with the proposed shelter, set to eventually house up to 200 people a night.

The shelter will open at 8 p.m. with lines forming no sooner than 7 p.m. People will be forced to leave the night shelter at 6 a.m.

Neighbors expressed concern that the project would increase drug use and crime in the area, particularly with people being turned away in the early morning hours…
