CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – The state is paying a Charleston County man $75,000 after he claimed wrongful arrest by a sheriff’s office deputy, and the charges have been dropped.
A lawsuit filed in 2023 says that in August 2021, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Dylan Vardon entered the fenced-in backyard of a property off U.S. Highway 17 in Ravenel without a warrant or cause. He arrested Jackie Chapman Jr. there, with the man’s mother watching.
While in jail, Chapman complained of arm pain, but the lawsuit says staff ignored those concerns. Soon after his release, a doctor declared Chapman’s arm fractured…
