‘It’s a hell hole:’ Alabama women’s prison criticized for inhumane conditions

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Inmates and their families are raising alarms about the dire conditions at Tutwiler Prison for Women, describing it as a “hell hole” amid ongoing issues in Alabama’s prison system. Despite the construction of a new mega prison for men, there are no immediate plans to address the problems at Tutwiler, the state’s oldest prison.

Rachel Elledge, who served time in 2021 on a drug charge, recounted her experience, saying, “I was taken out of an environment fueled by violence, drugs and led by thugs, then sentenced to another environment just as violent, but this time it was run by ADOC.”(Alabama Department of Corrections) Elledge highlighted the violence and drug issues within the prison, noting, “These women are stabbing each other, hitting each other with bricks over a $12 drug debt.”…
