The Amarillo Police Department issued a news release July 29 in response to reports circulating about a crash involving an officer that took place last month in Amarillo.
“We are aware of inaccurate reports labeling the incident as a hit-and-run. That is incorrect,” said APD’s Interim Police Chief Jimmy Johnson in the release. “Officers responded to the scene under reports of a potential hit-and-run; however, after reviewing witness affidavits collected at the scene and conducting further investigation, they confirmed that the parties exchanged insurance information as required by the Texas Transportation Code.”
Police said officers had responded to a report of a minor collision at around 8:20 p.m. June 19, involving the personal vehicle of an off-duty Amarillo officer in the 1600 block of South Kentucky Street. APD said that before officers arrived at the scene, the parties involved had exchanged insurance information, as required by the state code.
