New gravestones to honor Rockford’s Civil War veterans after 164 years

After more than a century, 36 Civil War veterans in Rockford will finally receive gravestones.

A mass installation event is scheduled for Aug. 1 at Cedar Bluff Cemetery, where volunteers and partner organizations plan to install new markers for veterans who had gone without for 164 years, according to a community announcement.

The event, organized by local nonprofit 815 Stone Scrubbers in partnership with Team Rubicon USA, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 1200 Rural St. in Rockford…
