‘A big achievement’ 148 people naturalized as American citizens in Knoxville ceremony

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — One hundred forty-eight people from 52 countries became American citizens at a naturalization ceremony in Knoxville Wednesday morning.

Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon spoke at the ceremony, welcoming the new Americans.

“Knoxville is a welcoming city. We celebrate different cultures,” she said. “Anybody can make it here in our community. You just have to work hard. You have to do the right thing, and this is part of what you’re doing today, earning your American citizenship.”

She continued, “Newcomers make Knoxville strong. Immigrants make America strong.”

New citizen Michael Custodio is in the United States Army, which he thinks made the naturalization process easier. He said he hopes he is making his family proud…
