Man gets 18 years after carjacking, shooting 60-year-old

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man was sentenced to 18 years after carjacking and shooting a 60-year-old man, according to the United States Attorney’s Office, Western District of Tennessee.

Jaylen Simpson, 23, was sentenced on Tuesday to 18 years in prison and five years of unsupervised release for carjacking that injured a man and discharging a firearm during the carjacking.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Western District of Tennessee, on April 15, Jaylen Simpson, 23, pleaded guilty to carjacking resulting in serious bodily injury and the use of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Last year, he was charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Especially Aggravated Robbery, Theft of Property $2,500 or less to wit a Firearm, Reckless Driving, Evading Arrest in a Vehicle, Evading Arrest on Foot, and Employment of a Firearm during the Commission of a Dangerous Felony.

On May 16, 2024, Simpson was hiding in the backyard in the 3400 block of West Horn Lake Road, and the 60-year-old man was shot as he was going outside to mow his lawn.

Reports say the suspect shot the victim in the stomach before he took off in the victim’s Kia Cadenza.
