Five people plead guilty to smuggling contraband into DC jail

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Five people pleaded guilty Wednesday for their involvement in a conspiracy to smuggle contraband to inmates in the D.C. jail who were waiting for murder and assault trials, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the District of Columbia.

LaTara Brown, 31, Kiya Holland, 33, Darius Robertson, 31, Marcel Vines, 28, and Stefon Freshley, 28, all pleaded guilty to providing or possessing contraband in a prison and conspiracy to do so.

The USAO said that a sixth suspect, 45-year-old Rashaad Roper, has yet to go on trial.

Officials said that as part of the plea, the group of five admitted to their roles in the conspiracy. The USAO said that Holland and Brown would package contraband like cell phones, knives, and other contraband substances into Tupperware containers…
