‘Rare and meaningful’: Louisville Zoo hatches 2 critically-endangered ducklings

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Zoo has successfully hatched two new Baer’s pochard ducklings, celebrating the milestone as a “lifeline for an entire species.”

Baer’s pochard ducks, pronounced “Bears Poach End,” are a critically endangered species. The new ducklings hatched on May 29.

“The arrival of a critically endangered species is rare and meaningful,” Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney said. “It’s a triumph for conservation and a testament to what’s possible when biology, stewardship, and love for wildlife come together. Every hatchling is not just a new life — it’s a lifeline for an entire species.”…
