Mobile to revamp another corridor in ongoing downtown transformation

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — Bids opened Wednesday for yet another major street makeover in Mobile. The next “complete streets” project is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue between Broad Street and Butchers Lane. The city hopes to break ground in the fall.

“This is going to be another project that prioritized safety for bicycles, walkers and cars. So, the community is going to see a pretty big change here,” said Jennifer Greene, Mobile Director of Programs and Project Management.

Greene says construction will shut down during Mardi Gras, and it will not be block-by-block construction like the St. Louis Street project. That means the entire block won’t be closed during construction. It will be single lane closures as work is performed on one side of the street, then the other side. On Tuesday, the city council approved the $16.7 million construction contract for the 17 block-by-block revamp of St. Louis St. that stretches from Broad Street to Water Street…
