Burn center director says councilman faces long recovery following fiery attack

RICHMOND, Va. (WSET) — Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler is facing a challenging recovery after suffering burns to 63% of his body in a fiery attack. Vogler is currently receiving treatment at the UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill.

Mac Drake, the burn medical director at the HCA Chippenham Burn Center in Richmond, described the injury as severe, noting that Vogler was reportedly doused in gasoline, which exacerbated the burns. “The gasoline is an accelerant, which makes the flame heat up even more and get deeper into the skin,” Drake said.

Drake explained that while such severe burns are survivable in most cases, Vogler is expected to remain hospitalized for several months. He will likely undergo dozens of surgeries and skin grafts, followed by intensive rehabilitation therapy to work on his range of motion and function…
