Judge commits East Village man to state mental hospital for fatal stabbing

An East Village man who repeatedly stabbed his downstairs neighbor – whom he had never previously met – has been committed to a state mental hospital after a judge determined he was insane at the time.

Several family members of the victim, Andrew Holland, 38, appeared before San Diego Superior Court Judge Frances Devaney, who committed Maxwell Thomas Logan, 27, to a state hospital, possibly for life.

Under California’s insanity law, Logan pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in a trial before Devaney. It will be up to Logan to prove that he has regained his sanity, should he ever petition a court for release…
