A legacy of love and language: Meet the ‘Voice of the Basques’

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — As Boise celebrates Jaialdi, many are remembering Espe Alegria — a Basque immigrant whose voice once connected a community scattered across the world.

From 1955 to 1981, Espe hosted “The Basque Hour” on KBOI Radio. She recorded the program at home, sharing her collection of music, news, family shout-outs, and community updates — all in Euskara, the Basque language.

“You knew when she was working. You needed to be quiet and just watch, ” remembered her granddaughter, Sarah Artis. “If it were your birthday, you would hear her wish you a happy birthday. It was such an exciting moment.”…
