Traffic jams statewide after tsunami warning

HONOLULU (Island News) — It was gridlock across the islands after evacuation orders were issued during rush-hour traffic.

“It was at a total crawl,” said commuter Devin Fukunaga. “The crawl got so bad, you know, that’s when drivers started making their own rules.”

Fukunaga was among the thousands of drivers stuck in the congestion.

“It takes its toll sitting down for two and a half, three hours for something that should be 15 minutes,” he said. “We’re pretty close to the water so if we were stuck there and if the tsunami did hit, I mean we wouldn’t be able to move.”…
