Speeding Doesn’t Save Time—It Costs Lives: TxDOT Urges Lubbock Drivers to Slow Down

We all know good things take time—whether it’s reeling in a big one at Lake Alan Henry or letting that brisket rest just right. But when it comes to driving, too many Texans are still trying to rush the process—and it’s costing lives.

Be Safe. Drive Smart.

That’s why the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is turning up the heat this summer with a fresh push to slow drivers down before tragedy strikes. Their latest campaign, “Be Safe. Drive Smart.”, puts the spotlight on the deadly reality of speeding, especially here in West Texas.

According to TxDOT, speeding was a factor in nearly 160,000 traffic crashes across Texas in 2024, claiming 1,467 lives—a staggering 35% of all traffic-related deaths in the state.

TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said via press release:

Speeding is not an accident, it’s a choice. And it’s a dangerous one. Even just a few miles over the limit can turn a close call into a deadly crash.
