There is a Wall Street Journal article about Buffalo that is making the rounds. It’s speaks to a certain Buffalo pride that many of us feel. Yet when it comes to the “outside world,” Buffalo is still a bit of an enigma, especially when it comes to people that have never paid a visit. For writers from other cities, who have visited Buffalo, it’s hard for them to not point out the snow, the Super Bowl losses, the population decline, etc. But once they get past those negative issues, which tend to legitimize their stories, they are able to sell this city on its architecture, waterfront, parks, people, cultural assets, liveability, etc.
As for the WSJ article, it’s centered around people that have moved away, made a nice living elsewhere, and opted to move back. Not only have they returned, they have done so in a manner that is impressive. Since returning, they have scooped up some sweet, architecturally significant homes, and they’ve set out to make a mark in the community. They’re also brought their professions, and zest for life, with them. Yes, these are people that could be living anywhere they want, yet they decided that Buffalo’s “calling card” was too tempting to pass up…
