Coalition pushes back against CofC housing project located on burial grounds

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – A coalition of organizations is pushing back against an upcoming College of Charleston housing project and demanding immediate community engagement.

Dozens of community members and leaders known as “Protect and Respect the Bodies” are protesting building dorms on site of known burial grounds and the former YWCA of Greater Charleston. The College of Charleston plans to build Coming Street Commons at 106 Coming Street to provide 1,200 beds to address the student housing shortage.

Ahead of a community meeting for the project next week, the coalition plans to ask the college questions and push for its involvement in the project. Organizations involved include the Preservation Society of Charleston, Black Lives Matter and the YWCA…
