Knoxville pastor working to open grocery store in latest effort to reduce food insecurity

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — With USDA funding cuts to local food banks, pastor Chris Battle and his organization, BattleField Farm, is looking to fill the gap. The farm coordinates with local groups to distribute fruits and vegetables using battle’s very own mobile grocery store.

“We take the veggie van out every week to five subsidized housing units just to give them the fresh vegetables, and they’re free,” Battle explained.

In 2018, Battle began growing fresh produce for Knoxville residents that don’t have the resources to access healthy food.

“I tell people, it’s easier to get weed here than it is to get collard greens,” Battle said. “And something’s wrong with that. Again, it’s all about accessibility and affordability.”…
