Cedar Rapids woman receives 20-year sentence in 2024’s only homicide case in city

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The woman charged in Cedar Rapids’ only homicide case of 2024 has been handed a 20-year prison sentence.

Charmisha Pirtle was originally charged with second-degree murder, which comes with a life prison sentence, but took a deal to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter and willful injury in the death of Anthony Fitts.

District court judge Valerie Clay gave Pirtle a two-year mandatory minimum – meaning she must serve that before she’s eligible for parole…
