AURORA, Colo (KDVR) — Aurora Fire Rescue is stepping up efforts to protect its firefighters- not just from flames, but from long-term health risks that come with the job.
This week, the department started giving out new single-layer gear designed to reduce exposure to toxic chemicals. The lightweight option called TECGEN will be worn for lower-risk calls like car crashes and medical calls.

“We have had two retirees that have passed from cancer,” said Hunter Hackbarth, Assistant Fire Chief for Aurora Fire Rescue. “We have other retirees that are managing some cancer issues right now.”
