ALDOT to begin Alabama 225 widening project in Spanish Fort

SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WALA) – A lengthy road construction project in Spanish Fort begins Monday, Aug. 4, 2025, and it will impact thousands of motorists. A stretch of Alabama 225 in town will be getting a center turn lane. The work is completely state funded, but it will be a headache for drivers for the next several months.

A 2024 traffic study showed that 10,000 cars travel along Highway 225 in Spanish Fort daily. That number is only growing along with the city. An upcoming widening project along a heavily populated area aims to cut down on accidents and improve access in and out of neighborhoods.

“Any driver that’s trying to turn left into the subdivisions, you know they’re sitting in the main through lane of Highway 225 and so, there’s been accidents involving rear end collisions,” said ALDOT Asst. Region Engineer for the SW District, Bran Aaron.

The center turn lane will be added between General Camby Boulevard and Oakridge Drive. As it stands now, motorists turning left into neighborhoods along that stretch must wait in the main roadway for traffic to clear.
