Pet owners are encouraged to make sure pets are up-to-date on rabies vaccinations

ALBANY, N.Y. (WTEN) — Health officials in New York State are encouraging pet owners to make sure their animals are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. Positive cases in animals have recently been found around in Nassau, Schoharie, Washington, and Schenectady counties.

According to the New York State Department of Health, since last July, there have been 364 animals outside of New York City that tested positive for the disease. The number of cases in 2025 are consistent with numbers in years past.

The department warns that rabies is transmitted through saliva and is mostly seen in raccoons, skunks, bats, foxes, deer, groundhogs and coyotes. However, any mammal can become infected…
