West Side Alderman, Neighbors Reject Housing Development On ‘Congested’ Stretch Of Harlem

AUSTIN — A plan for a large apartment complex on Austin’s Harlem Avenue has been nixed by neighbors and the alderman.

The five-story, market-rate rental development was to have about 80 units at 1933 and 1939 N. Harlem Ave., a lot that formerly housed a McDonald’s. The plans were discussed at a meeting Wednesday at the Rutherford Sayre Park gym at 6871 W. Belden Ave., where developers and neighbors sounded off on the proposal.

“I take away that there is no support for this project. There was overwhelming opposition to this particular project,” Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th) told dozens of community members at the end of the meeting. “We do have to make sure that we bring responsible and reasonable, community guided projects to our community.”…
