On this day in 1891: Lubbock gets its first newspaper

Lubbock pioneer, F.E. Wheelock can be found throughout the publication and Allison explained the importance that he had in making Lubbock into the Hub City it is today. “Wheelock was an original founder of Lubbock with others. He was the promoter for the Lubbock Townsite Company which was responsible for attracting settlers to Lubbock. He served as the first mayor, as well,” said Allison.

While the final publishing date of the Leader is unknown, the last preserved issue is from 1899 after it merged with The Texan Press to become the Texan Press Leader. Despite its short-lived nature, the Lubbock Leader set the precedent for news in the city and brought in settlers who helped build Lubbock from the ground up. Following in the Leader‘s footsteps, several competing newspapers would attempt to stake their claim to the South Plains. These include the aforementioned The Texan Press, which was established in 1892 and the eventual Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, which debuted in 1900.

The Avalanche-Journal remains a Lubbock staple 125 years after its inception, serving as the primary newspaper publication for the city. While not being directly connected, it is possible that without the Leader‘s initial success, the Avalanche-Journal would not have been established and transform the Lubbock news scene.

While the city, its people and the way news is delivered have drastically changed over the past century, the impact of the original Lubbock newspaper is still being seen today…
