South Lyon firefighters rescue racket-making raccoon after garbage can raid goes wrong

SOUTH LYON — A masked bandit who found himself in a high stakes situation was saved by some uncanny firefighters Aug. 1.A condo owner on Quail Run Circle called the fire department for assistance at about 11:30 a.m. after hearing clanking noises coming from the condo’s gutter. The culprit was a raccoon whose head was stuck in a tin can.

South Lyon Firefighter Lou Soave responded to the scene as well as Fire Chief Cindy Conrad and Firefighter Brian Hayes, who climbed up a ladder and scooped the raccoon into a towel.Soave recalls that once they had the raccoon to the ground it only took a minute or two to remove the can and set the juvenile raccoon free.”It’s not very often you find that,” Soave said. “He wasn’t hurt, just a little freaked out… The biggest mystery is how he got on the roof with a can on his head.”This is the first raccoon Soave has had the pleasure of helping save since he joined the department three and a half years ago, but he noted that firefighters are always happy to help the animals when they can and have previously rescued baby ducks from drains, as well as cats in trees like Mozart, who had a hair-raising adventure.”If you see an animal in need, please call us,” Soave said. “We will do whatever we can to help out.”…
