When Terry Guerra walked in to her first day of work at Whataburger by the Bay in Corpus Christi, she was in her 70s. She had spent her adult life as a restaurant server to take care of her three daughters after moving from San Antonio to the Texas Coast after divorcing her husband at age 32.
Guerra, now 89, has never needed an alarm clock in her entire life. The outgoing senior Whataburger Family Member is an early riser, and still enjoys an active life, dancing, listening to the oldies music and going in on a puzzle every now and then as a self-described “puzzle freak.”
She’s also a bit of a Corpus Christi media sensation, appearing semi-annually in press clippings as one of the chain’s oldest employees. After almost two decades of working at Whataburger by the Bay, the two-story, flagship location of the Texas burger chain empire, she says she has no plans to slow down any time soon.
At almost 90, she has faced injuries, falls and even a broken back outside of work. Each time, Guerra, who says dementia runs in her family, has recovered only to return to Whataburger. In fact, the local legend told MySA that it will take a sign from the Almighty himself for her to walk away from her work family…
