PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two people were seriously injured by gunshot early Sunday morning in the Old Town area amid a large crowd disturbance after a bar closure, authorities said.
Portland police said officers had already been monitoring the area of Northwest 4th Avenue and Northwest Couch Street, where a large group of about 100 people were gathering, at 2:20 a.m. Sunday.
Suddenly, the sound of gunshots rang out within the crowd and police jumped into action, converging upon the source of the gunfire. They found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds.
“Officers began trauma first aid on the victims while others tried to create a safe working space for the officers and paramedics. An estimated 50 people surrounded them and tried to push past the officers,” Portland Police Bureau said in a press release. “The officers trying to render aid had to split their attention due to the unruly crowd that significantly outnumbered the officers.”…
