This Day in History: Jesse Owens wins first Olympic gold medal

(WDBJ) – On this day in 1936, 23 year-old Jesse Owens won the first of his four gold medals at the Berlin Olympics in the 100 meter sprint, defeating the theories of a master race by the Nazi regime at the time.

Owens would go on to become a household name.

After his death, he was honored with a Congressional Gold Medal in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush…
