After years of talking, Micron project enters the ‘doing’ phase (Editorial Board Opinion)

The July 24 marathon public hearing on Micron Technology’s plan to build up to four computer chip factories in Clay signaled an important shift from talking about the project to taking the necessary steps to deliver it.

That was one key takeaway from the editorial board’s wide-ranging discussion the same day with key members of the team of New York state, Onondaga County and business community representatives who spent years to attract Micron to Onondaga County.

That work was “the easy part,” said Kevin Younis, the Syracuse native leading New York state’s efforts to attract a chipmaker. Now, Micron has to build it, he said. In addition to helping the company succeed, Younis said, “we want this community to be successful. And it’s on us, in partnership with Micron, to make sure that that happens.”…
