Texas has made history again, but this time it’s a meteorological achievement! The state is officially home to the world’s longest lightning bolt, a record confirmed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
The World’s Longest Lightning Bolt Ever Recorded
While the confirmation has only recently been made, this incredible lightning bolt actually occurred back in October 2017 during a massive thunderstorm that passed through East Texas.
The bolt, which traveled across three states, was an astonishing 515 miles long, making it the longest lightning strike ever recorded.
The lightning flash originated in East Texas and was visible all the way in Kansas City, Missouri. To put it in perspective, the bolt traveled a distance that would take about nine hours by car or approximately one and a half hours by commercial airplane…
