E-bike, e-scooter injuries trend upward in Mesa

Scottsdale’s new law went into effect last week banning youths under 16 from operating Class 3 e-bikes that can reach speeds up to 28 mph, but Mesa has had a tougher prohibition on the books for six years.

Mesa’s ordinance bars anyone under 16 from operating an e-bike of any class, an electric standup scooter or electric miniature scooter on any public right-of-way.

A Class 1 e-bike and Class 2-e-bike both can reach up to 20 mph but the former requires the rider to pedal for motor assistance while the latter can be propelled by motor alone using the throttle…
