In the middle of the day at a busy intersection in downtown Syracuse, a man was shot three times and died in the street. The DA’s office confirmed that the shooter was not a member of law enforcement and that the dead man had a knife. But there were few answers for how or why this happened. In an attempt to find those answers, Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard requested under the Freedom of Information Act the police reports and videos from the shooting and subsequent investigation. We reviewed more than 100 pages of police records and dozens of videos about the incident. Reporters also spoke with the shooter and with the family of the man who died.
