Ivan Carnero and Angel Arreola met as kids, horseback riding in their east side neighborhood in Amarillo, and became friends, though Arreola went to Tascosa High School and Carnero went to Caprock High School. After running into each other later on, they began to speculate on what they might want to do as business partners.
Arreola came from a family who owned a grocery store and meat market in East Amarillo, and Carnero became an experienced home builder. They two talents came together, and they began to dream about opening a small taquero place, like a Subway-type place for tacos.
“But then came this guy (Carnero) and said, ‘Uh, let’s get a bigger place,’” Arreola said. When Arreola saw Marshall’s, he showed it to Carnero and he kind of liked it. “It was broken up, it was terrible,” Carnero said. “The walls were falling in and just piles on piles of a mess in here. The concrete over in one area had roots come through from the big trees around the building. It was a nightmare.”…
